A project by Daniel Moreira and Rita Castro Neves in collaboration with the Creative Cities of Arts and Folk Arts
In the hustle and bustle of the marketplace, we are presented with images of objects, artifacts and processes from different places: ancient ways of transforming matter to create special objects.
All over the world, we take care of this know-how, handing it down from generation to generation, researching and promoting it, giving it new meaning, even if it no longer seems as useful as it once was. The appreciation of technical and aesthetic memory and a deep sense of belonging to this world help us in this task of sharing valued and renewed local knowledge – old and alive.
Represented UNESCO Creative Cities of Crafts and Folk Arts: Al Ahsa – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Barcelos – Portugal, Bida – Nigeria, Caldas da Rainha – Portugal, Carrara – Italy, Castelo Branco – Portugal, Chiang, Mai – Thailand, Ballarat – Australia, Jinju – South Korea, Ulaanbaatar – Mongolia, Como – Italy, Fabriano – Italy, Gimhea – South Korea, Hangzhou – China, Hoi An – Vietnam, Kanazawa – Japan, Manises – Spain, Nassau – Bahamas, Pekalongan – Indonesia, Perth – Scotland, United Kingdom, Sukhothai – Thailand, Weifang – China
Cinema and film provide privileged spaces for encounters with others, with the world. Their ability to tell stories through documentary, animated, or fictional narratives gives them the character of a universal language, positioning them as quintessential spaces to broaden how we perceive human life (and beyond). In this selection of short films from various corners of the globe, communities come together in building an imaginary neighborhood and, with it, new connections. Behind each film – and the faces within them – lie projects that connect through culture, seeking to give visibility, document, and create new horizons for different ways of life.
UNESCO Creative Cities of Film: Busan – South Korea, Cannes – France, Gdynia – Poland, Łódź – Poland, Mumbai – India, Potsdam – Germany, Sarajevo – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Terrassa – Spain, Valladolid – Spain, Vicente López – Argentina, Wellington – New Zealand, Yamagata – Japan

Guided by Portuguese musicians Sara Yasmine (Sopa de Pedra) and António Sérginho (Retimbrar, Manuel Cruz), a group of musicians from the Portuguese Creative Cities of Music will create a performance centered in traditional instruments from each city: Idanha-a-Nova is represented by the adufe and the viola beiroa; Leiria by its clay jugs and zinc pitchers; and the city of Amarante by their traditional percussion instruments.
Musicians and instructors Sara Yasmine and António Serginho from the Retimbrar collective will lead the gathering on July 1st, featuring As Rosas de Santa Maria de Jazente (Amarante), Adufeiras de Idanha-a-Nova, and Trio MaraBilha from Leiria. This triangular meeting of performers from Amarante, Leiria, and Idanha-a-Nova predominantly involves women and aims to explore not just the sounds and timbres unique to each location but also to seek a common rhythm through shared practices. They will discover what the drums and snares convey in the presence of bilhas, cântaros, and adufes, and whether rhythm still plays a role in daily life, and if the origins of each expression include the voice. May the beats echo and the subtle sounds be heard!

Language is a virus.
Human kind has been infected since ever and forever.

Old communication devices invite us to look into the future and express feelings, anxieties and desires.
